Prediction: The Shortest-Lived Certification in History: The Authors Guild’s “Human Authored” Seal of Approval
Feb 11, 2025
Ah, the Authors Guild—always here to make things slightly murkier in the name of clarity. Their latest move? A “Human Authored” certification, because, apparently, we’re now at a point where books need a sticker to remind readers that—wait for it—a human wrote them.
Yes, friends, in a world where AI is revolutionizing everything from medical research to financial markets, the best we can come up with for creative writing is spell-check and research assistance? I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Microsoft Word has been doing spell-check since 2002, and Google has been handling research since at least 1998.
Grammar Checkers and AI Lite™: The Guild’s Revolutionary AI Guidance
According to the Authors Guild, you can still earn their coveted “Human Authored” label as long as AI is used for, and I quote:
“spell-checking, grammar-checking, and research assistance.”
What a bold and visionary stance.
Tell me, Guild—is this truly what we’re doing with AI? Are we taking the most groundbreaking creative tool of our time and reducing it to Grammarly, but make it ethical? Because that is peak 2000s energy, and frankly, I’m offended on behalf of the entire writing profession.
If we’re going to sit here and pretend that using AI as a creative collaborator makes a book less human, then what exactly are we saying about traditional publishing? Because, last I checked, developmental editors exist, and nobody seems to be clutching their pearls over the fact that some of them rewrite entire books.
The Dance of Delusion: Editing vs. AI
Another delightful dance the Guild does is around editing—because, let’s be real, nobody knows how to talk about it without stepping on a landmine.
The stance seems to be:
- It’s totally fine if a human editor reworks half your novel, but if a machine suggests an alternative phrasing? BURN IT. BURN IT ALL.
- You can use AI to fix a misplaced comma, but the second it helps you brainstorm a plot twist, you’ve crossed into the Dark Side.
The irony is delicious, really. If I tell ChatGPT, “Help me rewrite this clunky paragraph”, am I no longer an author? Because if that’s the case, every writer who has ever collaborated with another human being should probably turn in their Human Authored™ badge now.
The Great “Readers Want Only Human Books” Myth
And then, of course, there’s this gem from the Guild’s announcement:
“Readers have a right to know whether a book was written by a human.”
Okay. Sure. And readers also have a right to know if the book was ghostwritten, if a developmental editor overhauled half the manuscript, or if it was rewritten in its entirety by a publishing house’s in-house team.
But you don’t see stickers for that, do you?
Because let’s be honest—this isn’t about transparency. It’s about gatekeeping. It’s about trying (and failing) to hold back the inevitable by creating arbitrary rules that don’t actually make sense.
The Certification That Won’t Survive the Year
Now, I’m no psychic, but I’d bet good money that the “Human Authored” certification has the shelf life of an open avocado.
Because here’s what’s going to happen:
- People will realize it’s meaningless. Authors will still use AI to brainstorm, draft, edit, and refine their books—just like they do now.
- Readers won’t care. Nobody is scanning bookshelves thinking, Gosh, I sure hope this author only used AI for spell-checking!
- The market will evolve beyond this nonsense. AI-assisted writing will become as normal as using a computer to type instead of a typewriter.
And when that happens, the Guild’s little “Human Authored” badge of honor will be as relevant as a Myspace Top 8.
Real Talk: AI is a Tool, Not a Threat
Look, I get it. Change is scary. But clinging to outdated ideas about what it means to “author” a book is just going to leave a lot of writers in the dust.
AI does not replace human creativity. It enhances it.
It helps authors:
- Overcome writer’s block
- Structure messy drafts
- Brainstorm new angles
- Improve prose
- Actually finish their damn books
And last I checked, finishing books is kind of the goal here.
So, if you want to cling to some useless sticker that makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside, go for it. But the rest of us will be over here actually writing, finishing, and publishing our books—with AI as our creative ally.
And guess what? They’ll still be human-authored.
Welcome to the future.
